Welcome to the Islamic Center
Islam and the Tradition of Knowledge Islam began in the 7th century CE with the revelation of the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Makkah. From its earliest days, Islam placed great emphasis on knowledge, learning, reflection, and education, with the first revealed command beginning with the word “Iqra” — “Read” or “Recite.” In Madinah, after the migration of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, a group of devoted companions known as Ahl al-Suffah lived at the Suffah, a sheltered area adjoining the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi). They dedicated themselves to learning the Qur’an, understanding the teachings of Islam, and receiving guidance directly from the Prophet ﷺ. The Suffah became an important centre of learning, spiritual development, and transmission of knowledge. Many of its students later travelled to different regions and became teachers, scholars, and transmitters of Islamic knowledge, contributing to the spread of education throughout the Muslim world. The tradition of Suffah therefore represents more than a physical place—it symbolizes a commitment to knowledge, education, character building, service, and the development of individuals who benefit society. Inspired by this historic tradition, Suffah Welfare & Educational Society seeks to continue the spirit of learning and service by supporting education, social welfare, employment initiatives, counselling, community awareness, and humanitarian activities..
